Mocktails

Spice & Tonic Mocktail

Aah. Writing this post is like a breath of fresh air. For the longest time I’ve wanted to make this drink and share with you a brand I am particularly pumped about: Seedlip. They’re the world’s first non-alcoholic spirit. You read that right! They’re changing the game in the bar world, solving the problem of “what to drink when you’re not drinking.” C’mon, now. Shirley Temples are for children and everyone is sick of cranberry juice and club soda, am I right? Seedlip is raising the bar (no pun intended) and I am so excited for their future as a company.

I had the privilege of meeting Lorena, Seedlip’s Brand Engagement Manager, last year in New York. She so kindly left me with a couple of bottles and in the midst of our move this summer I had them set aside– until now! Before I tell you about this mocktail (for lack of a better term), let me tell you a little more about why Seedlip was born. You can read more on their story here.

Seedlip is a nature company — we’re working with the natural world to change the way the world drinks! – Ben, Founder

More than just a desire to get away from sugary, juice-based drinks, Seedlip’s founder Ben tapped into this growing demand for sophisticated non-alcoholic drinks. Let’s say you’re pregnant. Or trying to become pregnant. Heck, maybe you have to wake up early tomorrow morning and don’t want to feel drowsy the next day or you’re sober (there’s an incredible sober movement heating up in the restaurant world, read about it here).

Whatever the reason, up until this point there have been less-than-thrilling NA options out there. Why should the alcoholic drinks have all the fun, anyway? Today, countless high-end restaurants and bars all over the world are buying Seedlip. Bartenders are serving up super creative drinks to their guests.

It’s about time NA drinks became cool.

Next time you squeeze your way up to the bar at Gramercy Tavern, ask for the NA menu. If you’re like me and want to make all sorts of amazing drinks at home, grab yourself a copy of Seedlip’s recipe book!

Buy Seedlip on their website or on Amazon.

So, onto this little recipe! Recipes this easy I have a hard time even dubbing recipes. They’re almost too easy. We need a short name for that. Throw some things in a glass and get sipping!

This silly easy drink comes together with the help of a local tonic syrup made by Truffula Farm in Roanoke. I picked it up at the Grandin Farmer’s Market toward the end of the summer. Their beautiful, bright orange tonic is made simply of water, sugar, citric acid, citrus, spices, herbs and salt. Paired with the woodsy, spice and citrus notes in Seedlip Spice 94, it’s captivating. It’s complex but not overpowering, refreshing and SO not boring. Move over, club soda. There’s a new guy in town!

Chances are, you don’t live in Roanoke and can’t get this special tonic from Truffula. Fear not, you should totally make Seedlip’s Spice & Tonic recipe.

Enjoy! P.S. I want to get everyone I know this mini set for Christmas.
